Nation building is a normative concept that means different things to different people. In political science, nation-building is a term used to describe the construction of a functioning state. To put it succinctly, according to Irele (1999), nation building can be defined as a process of bringing of diverse groups together to develop their common land. There has been a lot of debates surrounding what the contributions of economist are to national development. As we know, the fundamental problem of any society is said to be scarcity i.e. the idea that demand is always greater than the resources that the society has. All over the world countries are benefiting from immense contributions of economist. For Developed economies that has fully recognized the potentials of economist, the following are ways by which they help develop and build their various economist. It is an established fact that economist when given a greater role to play helps manage an economy and help avoid problems such as inflation and unemployment. For example, during the great depression in 1930’s, a British economist, John Maynard Keynes developed his general theory of employment, income and money. He argued that the economy needed expansionary fiscal policy, higher borrowing and government spending. The European government at that time advanced this theory and it helped them move out of recession. Another outstanding contributions of an economist to any society particularly to the developed economies is the contributions they bring in overcoming the problems of market failure. An economist can usually suggest policies to overcome the problems of market. For example, they could advise government to increase taxation on goods that have huge negative externalities or the subsidization of public goods or services that are currently underproduced.
Also, an important area where an economist comes handy is in the area of conducting research and providing practical applications to findings. This special function of providing practical applications makes them superior to other related discipline. Economist collect and analyze data, monitor economic trends and develop forecasts. Depending on the topic under study, economist may focus on topics such as energy costs, inflation, interest rates, farm prices, rents, imports, exports or employment. These topics form the core of most economies. In Nigeria today, economist in their very little ways are making huge contributions to the development of the country. Upon graduation, they are equipped with the basic and fundamental knowledge of economics that makes them outperform their colleague in related or similar disciplines. In addition, numerous economist have contributed to the development of Nigeria while some are still contributing to the project of nation building. Among some of these notable economists though not limited to are Late Pius Okigbo, Late Prof. Sam Aluko, Prof. Pat Utomi, Prof. Charles Soludo, Lamido Sanusi, Dr. Okonjo Iweala and Prof. M.I Obadan. “To build a nation where peace and justice shall reign” are words from the second stanza of the Nigeria’s national anthem. The implication here is that Nigeria can build a strong and viable nation if and only if there is an existence of common values, beliefs, attitudes and effective leadership. Such transformation must allow economist more participation in the economic, political and the social spheres of the nation. While Nigerian leaders need to continue making reforms and policies that can promote integration and nation building, economist must continue to carry out research work as this is the bedrock of any nations development.
